“What does the Easter story — the death and Resurrection of Jesus — mean to you?”
As Mount St. Mary Catholic High School approached Easter, an important question was asked around campus: “What does the Easter story — the death and Resurrection of Jesus — mean to you?”
Miyalyn Brown, Class of 2027
“I remember one time when I was in fifth or sixth grade, I attended Stations of the Cross with my family. About halfway through, I asked myself, ‘Jesus died, but for what? He died and rose into heaven. What did that prove?’ My young mind was too underdeveloped to comprehend the true meaning and weight of what Jesus did for us. I don't think I'll ever be able to fully understand how much he did.
“In the creed, we say, ‘He descended into hell, and on the third day he rose again ...’ Jesus opened the gates of heaven for us. It reminds me of Matthew 16:18, which says, "And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.’ I don’t think it means that the gates of heaven will withstand hell. I think it means that hell will not be able to withstand the gates of heaven, because of what Jesus has done for us.
“Easter is such a powerful season. It's definitely more than the bunnies and eggs. It's about Jesus' passion and ultimate triumph over what we fear. Jesus is showing us just how strong he is, and how much he loves us.”
Mark Woodward, math teacher
“Our faith depends on the Resurrection. Paraphrasing Saint Paul, if the Resurrection did not occur, then our faith is in vain. It is worthless and untrue. What would be the basis for the meaning of life? On a personal level, the resurrection means life. Life wins. Death, where is your sting?”
Lucy Rosenhamer, Class of 2026
“To me, the Easter story is God's love letter to us. It portrays God's unending love for us and for all of those who came before us and will come after us. Jesus' resurrection shows that we don't need to be afraid of death.
“When I was at my lowest point, I was scared and felt so utterly alone. When I told my parents how I felt, my mother prayed with me. She knew that she didn't have the tools to help me, but she knew that God would take care of me. Her act of prayer saved me.
It showed me that I am not alone and that God is always with me, even when it doesn't feel like it. Jesus wasn't afraid of dying because he knew that it would save us. I know that when I feel scared and alone, he is right there with me. I always feel his presence during Mass because I know that he is present in the Eucharist and offering himself for us.
“The Easter story tells humanity: ‘I am here. I love you. I would do anything for you. Death is not the end but the beginning of your life with me.’”
Nancy-Marie Arteaga, math teacher and e-sports coach
“The Resurrection of Jesus reminds me that no matter how dark or hopeless a situation may feel, there is always light and renewal on the other side. Easter is a time when I’m reminded of God’s mercy, his love for each of us, and the power of transformation.
“Personally, it’s a season of deep gratitude – especially as a teacher and coach, I see how young people carry burdens silently. The Easter story helps me offer hope to my students, especially when they need someone to believe in them. Christ’s triumph over death speaks to all of us who’ve experienced grief, doubt or struggle. It’s a reminder that love is stronger than death, and we’re never truly alone in our hardships.”
