Venerable Father Augustus Tolton (1854–1897) Born into slavery in 1854, became the first African American to be ordained a priest.
Servant of God Dorothy Day (1897-1980) An advocate for the poor and the founder of the Catholic Worker movement.
Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman (1937–1990) A pioneering African American Franciscan Sister, teacher and scholar who championed racial justice and cultural diversity within the Catholic Church.
Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen (1895-1979) Archbishop Sheen published dozens of books and hosted popular radio and television shows, even beating out Lucille Ball for an Emmy for “Most Outstanding Television Personality.”
Servant of God Rhoda Wise (1888-1948) An Ohio woman who converted to Catholicism after being introduced to the Rosary. Wise claimed she was completely healed of several ailments after receiving a visit from Jesus in her home. Hundreds of people visited her home weekly seeking help, with many healings reported.
Servant of God Nicholas Black Elk (1863-1950) A member of the Lakota Native American tribe, he was chosen by Jesuit missionaries as a catechist in 1907, a role he served in faithfully for 50 years. He traveled around on horseback teaching the Catholic faith.
Blessed Solanus Casey (1870-1957) A priest of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, he was known as a healer and for his abilities as a spiritual counselor, but especially for his great attention to the sick.
Servant of God Julia Greeley (1833-48 – 1918) Born a slave, Greeley was known for her charitable efforts in Denver, overcoming significant personal hardships and health issues to do so.
Blessed Father Michael McGivney (1852-1890) The son of Irish immigrants, McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1882. Initially intended to assist widows and their families upon the deaths of their husbands, it has grown into a worldwide Catholic fraternal order.
Emil Kapaun (1916-1951) An American Catholic priest and United States Army captain who served as a chaplain during World War II and the Korean War, and died as a prisoner of war.
Servant of God Michelle Duppong (1984-2015) Michelle Duppong served as a FOCUS missionary starting in 2006, before becoming the director of adult faith formation for the Diocese of Bismarck.
Prayer for the Canonization of Bl. Stanley Rother
O God, fount of all holiness, make us each walk worthily in our vocation, through the intercession of your Saints, on whom you bestowed a great variety of graces on earth. Having graced your Church with the life of your priest and martyr, Blessed Stanley Rother, grant that by his intercession this humble flock may reach where the brave shepherd has gone. Grant that your Church may proclaim him a saint living in your presence and interceding for us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
