"What does the Easter story — the death and Resurrection of Jesus — mean to you?”
Approaching Easter, the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School community reflected on the Lenten season the celebration of Christ’s death and resurrection, with a question: “What does it mean for you?”
Andrew Benites, Class of 2026
“He brought so much change to the Jewish faith, and that changed into Christianity, so
after his Resurrection and ascension, we were kind of entering a new kind of age of Catholicism and Christianity.
“Lent is like giving up, so I guess disciplining yourself to follow the Lent sacrifices. “In
Lent it helps build discipline and build patience and restraint to kind of prevent you from sinning.”
Franny Santos, Class of 2028
“I’d say the Resurrection, ultimately, for me, is like my salvation. Jesus’ resurrection gives me life and joy, the biggest joy. His suffering and death definitely affect me in the way I live because I try to imitate that suffering and suffer with him in his Resurrection.
“I try to find ways that I can deny myself something and strengthen my desire to grow closer to God. In that denying of myself like in any little, and also loving the people
around me with everything, I can show them the same love that Jesus had for us.”
Matthew Grover, freshmen history teacher
“I think as much as Lent is about self-reflection, I think it should also be about community to some extent, because having other people helps you keep yourself accountable, especially if you share your goals and you share what you’re trying to do.
“It comes from a place of understanding that humans are flawed. We are all sinners, but
it’s not necessarily about sin. It’s about how you react to that sin and how you move
forward from that sin.
“I try to recognize in other people the fact that we are all people and we are all sinners and we are all flawed to where, if that’s true of everyone, then why get hung up on one person’s mistake, right?
Mary Krodel, Class of 2027
“We’re participating with Jesus. I think it’s important that we sacrifice something,
because then we’re holding up our end.”
Marie Engel, sophomore English teacher
“It’s the holiday from which everything else springs. The Resurrection story, I firmly believe, is true and gives life hope and meaning.
“The passion is very dark, but then Easter Sunday makes you feel like you know you can start again.”
