As we usher in another school year across the archdiocese, where impressive work continues to stand out, the Sooner Catholic is committed to shining a light on the good that’s going on in our schools, debuting with this issue a new regular feature: on-site student reporters at our Catholic high schools.
Emma Bowman, a senior at Mount Saint Mary, will write “Moments at the Mount.” Katherine Menz, a junior at Bishop McGuinness, is authoring “Irish Insights.” We are currently seeking a writer at Cristo Rey.
This reporting from those in the throes of high school life will surely be of interest to current students, alums and supporters.

Moments at the Mount 3… 2… 1… BLAST OFF If you’re anything like me, the first day of high school was chaotic, to say the least. There were a million new faces with names I’d never heard of before, teachers I hoped I’d like (or at least, hoped they liked me), and more things going wrong than I could have ever dreamed of. Even with only four classes during the day, I managed to end up in the wrong one at least seven times. Of course, we all know that this is a very normal experience of the first day of high school. To all those who were in middle school just a short three months ago, know that almost nothing from this year will matter in 20 years. So, what did our new and returning Rockets experience during these busy days?
The Rocket Rookie Rally The incoming Rockets were launched head-first into their new home. Held on Aug. 9, the Rally eased the new students into their high school journey. The Mount Rush showcased some of the clubs Rockets can join: ●Green Team ●Speech and Debate ●Robotics ●Band and Musical Theater ●Cheer and Pom Squad
The “Littles” Have Become “Bigs” The MSM “Big Sis & Little Sis” dinner held Aug. 10 allowed the Freshmen Littles to meet their Senior Bigs. The Senior ladies hid in their reveal boxes and waited for their countdown … then SURPRISE! Gift baskets and a warm welcome (accompanied with hugs and Raising Cane’s) followed suit.
The Seniors Celebrated Early… In the Morning The Class of 2025 gathered on Glass Family Field for the Senior Sunrise … oh, but the sunrise apparently overslept … like me. Since the sunrise decided to not exactly make an appearance, many Seniors decided to whip out some chalk markers and decorate their cars. Let me just say that there are definitely some mini-Michelangelos in my class.
Organized Chaos Hurried steps echoed through the halls as students made their way to classes on the first day. There were plenty of new faces.
The Mantle of Our Lady MSM celebrated the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady with the first all-school Mass of the year. Father Jerome Krug reminded us during his homily that, “We can only go where we’re looking.” An MSM alumnus himself, Father Krug explained how Our Lady’s Assumption into Heaven can serve as a guide for us to, using his analogy of baseball or golf athletes, “keep our eyes on the ball,” which represents union with God in Heaven. The week was filled with so much, it’s hard to believe there’s still a whole year of events to look forward to. Fly Rockets, fly!
Things to look forward to …
